How Panic Away Saved My Life By Stopping My Panic Attacks

(Guest Post by Beth Randolph)

Like most people, I never really considered myself an “anxious person”. I mean, everyone has their moments – public speaking, a first date, etc – but overall I’d always considered myself a shy person, maybe, but not a person who had real difficulties with anxiety – much less panic attacks!

And then, I turned 35.

So what was big about 35? Well, there were a few things. First, my marriage broke up. We had been having problems for quite a long time, but it surprised me when it happened. Then, and this is the worst part – my brother committed suicide. He’d always been the black sheep, for sure, maybe had some problems with drinking, but suicide? I was in shock. My parents were in shock. Our entire family was in shock.

Like anyone who encounters a lot of difficulties at once, I took to alcohol to calm my nerves. First, it was a bit of weekend warrior stuff – no big deal, or so I thought – but then it started to be lunches. A few drinks after dinner. Going into work was hard. I found myself getting the kind of anxiety that felt like someone was punching me in the stomach. Whenever my boss came around, I worried. Whenever he asked me anything, I panicked.

Then, the panic attacks began. At first, I didn’t really know what was happening. My heart was beating out of my chest. I began getting so anxious that I really didn’t know what to do with myself. So, my lunches started getting a little more “liquid based”.

I drank to control the panic, and it worked… for a while. I even went to a psychiatrist, who prescribed Zoloft.

That’s when I hit rock bottom.

Beth's life was spiraling out of control - until she found Panic Away.

Beth’s life was spiraling out of control – until she found Panic Away.

I was having lunch at my usual haunt with a buddy of mine from work. I had a couple of martinis, but overall I felt fine. I remember paying, and I remember leaving the restaurant. It seemed like a typical day.

Until it wasn’t. The next thing I remembered was waking up in hospital. I had bandages on my head. I had a couple of IVs hooked up. And within an hour, I was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Apparently, I had run into the back of a car at a red light. The car behind me had run into me, and so on… It was a four car pile up. And I was responsible.

According to the police, I had a blood alcohol level of .35. Now, I personally thought that a level like that meant that you’re probably dead. What I didn’t know at the time, however, was that the Zoloft had probably exaggerated my alcohol level, as well as the symptoms.

The result was that I lost my license on the spot (horrible, because my job involved driving around the area quite a lot). I also was on the hook for all of the damages to ALL FOUR CARS. What’s more, it was possible I would go to jail. This all came with the crazy realization that I could have DIED. Or worse, I could have killed an innocent person – all because my anxiety and panic attacks were getting the best of me.

A Time For Change

I knew I had to change. I had a family to think about. A life. A job that I really loved. And the fact was, I missed my old self. The way I used to be before my anxiety made it difficult to actually go to the mall, never mind work. I knew I had to do something. I took to the web to do some research. The Anxiety Disorders Association of America was my first stop. I ended up finding a support group in my city, which I was majorly happy for. It was a start.

But I found the anxiety was still there, and worsening. Obviously, my looming court date felt like ten tons of pressure, and I started to have panic attacks everyday. I had stopped drinking, and had been prescribed more SSRIs, but found that I was losing focus, and that the medication was really not working for me. Even going to the mall felt like torture.

A Good Friend

I was spiraling out of control, frankly, and didn’t know what to do with myself. It was a struggle just going to work, so when an old college roommate came into town and wanted to get together, I almost balked. But for some reason (probably loneliness, frankly), when she asked me to dinner I decided to go. I figured a few drinks (and a cab ride, of course) would probably settle my nerves, and that seeing a friend was something I needed.

Well, after we had talked for a while, I broke down. It could have been the Zoloft, the drinks or just the utter sense of hopelessness I felt, or the fact that I just needed someone to listen.

And listen she did. What I soon found out was that she had always had problems with anxiety herself. In fact, she basically confirmed that she’d taken pretty much the identical medications I had. Nothing had helped! Her anxiety seemed to get worse by the month, and she felt like she wasn’t even functioning properly.

But how could this woman – recently married, driving a nice car, successful in her job – really have the same issues with me. The same panic attacks that seemed to creep out of nothing?

“Simple,” she said. “Have you ever heard of Panic Away?”

Of course I hadn’t. And over the next hour I learned a lot about a program that I had no idea even existed. No more panic attacks? Lessened anxiety? No drugs? It all seemed like a fantasy to me. How was it possible that you could control your anxiety BY YOURSELF? How had I missed it?

The Road Back

The next day, I immediately found the Panic Away website. I immediately ordered the program. For the price of a couple Zoloft refills, it ended up being worth its weight in gold! Over the next several weeks, I began using the techniques Panic Away describes to naturally calm myself. I read the booklets and watched the DVDs religiously. Slowly, I stopped taking the Zoloft. I started to really get control over myself. No longer was it such an absolute chore to go out in public. No longer was work such a nervous experience. My panic attacks stopped.

It all seems absolutely ridiculous to me now. All of those moments of heightened anxiety. All of those times I stayed in the bathroom at work “a little longer than I should have” if only to avoid interacting with my boss. All of the times when I stayed in on a Saturday because I just didn’t want to deal with people. All of them gone… With just a little education.

Now, months after my court date (which I was able to confidently attend because of Panic Away), I am a changed person. I’m dating again, and life has taken a complete 360 since my car accident.

For this, I can thank Panic Away.

And believe me, if it can work for me… it can work for you. Check out their website here!

When Panic Attacks Reviewed: Real, Solid Solutions With A Light Tone

As someone who’s suffered panic and anxiety attacks for most of my life, it’s always shocked me how few solutions there seem to be for this problem. I mean, this is a human problem, and one that has been around since humans have been around (although I imagine the anxiety was a little higher when you’re hunting a mammoth! :) ), and yet this remains a problem we haven’t quite licked. The reason why this is the case is quite simple: we’re all different. The things that trigger our panic issues are different and depend mostly on you… so if you’re looking for a “one size fits all” solution, you’re probably not going to find it.

When Panic Attacks is easily one of the most complete "anti-anxiety" books we've ever seen. Get it at Amazon here.

Tackling Panic – A Multi-Pronged Approach

This is one of the truly fantastic things about When Panic Attacks (subtitled: The New, Drug-Free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life), a pretty amazing book by Dr. David Burns, MD. Dr. Burns, a clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine, shows us that anxiety, despite the fact that it can seem extremely powerful to sufferers, can be dealt with – without drugs, and permanently. With the help of a large number (40!) of solid, frankly quite neat exercises and techniques, When Panic Attacks is easily one of the simplest, most actionable anti-anxiety program we’ve ever seen. Naturally, this isn’t a book you can read in a day and then solve your problems the next (you do have to work at it, and the techniques do require practice), but it really does provide a foundation for ridding yourself of those scary moments of anxiety and panic that can be not only difficult, but crippling.

Simple, Solid Approach

One of the best parts of When Panic Attacks has to be the fact that it’s so readable. Dr. Burns is no Ivy-League fuddy-duddy writing some boring textbook – instead you can tell that he’s passionate about his subject, and about helping his readers. Using what the doctor calls a “Daily Mood Log”, he really gives you quite a formidable toolbox to fight against anxiety. But in the end, it is important to remember that YOU need to take advantage of the techniques. YOU need to practice them. The wide variety of ideas in the book enable you to almost “customize” what works for you – but again, without actually ACTING on the techniques, it will be very difficult to solve anxiety or panic issues. This sounds like common sense, of course, but as with anything, if you don’t do the work, you don’t get the rewards.

The book also provides help with other issues like phobias, depression and mood swings. This is all logical and straight-to-the-point stuff, and Dr. Burns’ tone is always fun and educational. This helps a LOT, as the subject matter (as we all know) can be a source of serious pain and fear.

Get It, But Keep It Paperback

One of the things that you should know about When Panic Attacks is that it’s really a book that is better digested as a paperback book, as opposed to a Kindle download. This is because in digital format, many of the charts and diagrams are simply not readable in Kindle format or on a 7″ screen. The downside of this, of course, is that at 464 pages, this is a serious tome.

But it’s for a serious issue. One that by the end of reading When Panic Attacks, you should have a pretty great handle on. Click here to get it at Amazon.

The Usual Causes Of Panic Attack

ucopaA constant anxiety and fear is what usually describes the panic attack, and there are many causes of this illness. Many studies have shown that panic attack can also be hereditary, but it does not mean it cannot be stopped. In order to stop panic attacks, the patient must understand how this illness can change someone’s life, and what can be learned from it.

Among various biological causes, every little change in brain function can lead to panic attack. Even other mental disorders, such as schizophrenia may be connected to panic disorder, so it is important to figure out what is the cause and what the consequence. For decades, the doctors are trying to figure out what really happens in human brain that it responds so negatively to some situations and events. If possible, the patient should change the environment that may trigger the panic attack. On the other hand, people can react differently to the same event, and that is what makes this illness so hard to figure out. What really counts is learning to stop panic attacks, or help family members who suffer from it. When left untreated, this illness can only ruin the individual and his relationship with the family.

Driving And Panic Attacks

The panic attacks do not choose the place or time. For many people it is very embarrassing to experience a panic attack in public, but what if it happens in the car, the middle of a highway? People who suffer from this condition should know how to stop panic attacks while driving, in order to prevent an accident.

The most important thing to understand is that brain sends the message that the panic attack is about to happen, and the patient must stop it. There are usually certain symptoms that happen prior the panic attack, and in that case, the driver should get off the road, if possible. Another important thing is to be realistic all the time, and believe it is possible to start breathing deeply, calm the mind and stop panic attacks. Another strategy includes the brain distraction where the patient should concentrate on something else, and the attack will be over soon. Another thing that can calm the patient’s mind is counting down, and after a couple of minutes, the body and mind will get back to normal. After experiencing the first panic attack, many people do not want to drive anymore because they fear for their own life and life of other people. However, there is the way to stop panic attacks while driving, and it is not that difficult to get the life back to normal.

Panic Attacks In Children

It is known that stress causes panic attacks, but it does not refer only to adults. Even the children can have stressful experiences that can leave consequences on their health. Before parents try to stop panic attacks in their children, it is better to find out what triggers them.

Many children phobias are connected to the school time, and according to some studies, children may refuse to go to school in order to avoid being embarrassed or rejected for some reason. Children can be stressed out, as well, and that stress is mostly caused by too much school work, or even some kind of abuse by bullies. Children are usually very attached to their home and family, so when their parents decide to move, leaving the familiar surroundings can cause real trauma. Panic attacks can occur even when child sleeps, or during a normal, everyday activity, so it is hard to predict it. Experts even say that recalling any kind of traumatic can trigger the panic attack in children, and the parents must help the children understand what he is going through, and that he will be just fine.  It is recommended for parents to monitor their children if they notice the symptoms, so they can stop panic attacks and let the them have the normal life.

Panic Attacks And Pregnancy

paapPanic attacks can be devastating enough, but if they occur during pregnancy, the mother-to-be should be aware of danger they bring along. Pregnancy already brings emotional and stressful periods, and when the panic attacks are added, every woman starts worrying for baby’s life and her own. Treating Panic Attacks With CBT

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most successful cures for panic attacks, and it helps the patient by changing the way they think and behave. This is not some kind of medication that can remove the problem, but it can make the patient look at it more positively. This approach is used as a treatment for depression, PTSD, eating disorder, drug misuse and panic attack.

When it comes to panic attacks, this therapy helps by breaking the problems in smaller parts, and breaking the negative feelings and thoughts. It goes deep to the core of the problem, and helps the patient understand why he feels so miserable and how he can change it. The CBT sessions are usually organized a couple of times a week, but it all depends on severity of the problem. Many doctors recommend this therapy mostly because its high efficiency, and comparing to other cures for panic attacks, it last a short period of time. On the other hand, this therapy cannot be effective if the patient refuses to cooperate with the therapist, because the therapist can give an advice, but everything other depends on the patient. In addition, people who have more complex health issues may not respond to this therapy.

Avoid Panic Attack During Sleep

Panic attacks can occur anytime, anyplace, but it can be even more disturbing if they happen during night. Many studies have shown that about 70% people who suffer from this illness may experience the panic attack during night. Many people do not know how to handle this situation, and they keep asking why is this happening to them, but instead of that, they should learn the facts and find out the cures for panic attacks.

Nocturnal panic attack may occur for no particular reason, but in many situations, it is connected with other problems, such as obstructive sleep apnea, hyperventilation disorder or frequent nightmares. All those conditions do not let the person have a good night sleep, and when stress mixes with fear, the panic attack may occur. Therefore, it is recommended to take care of those conditions first in order to avoid panic attacks. That includes regular exercise and normal weight maintenance, acid medications, apnea treatments, and so on. On the other hand, when panic attack triggers are taken care of, the patient should look for cures for panic attacks, and they include regular therapies for this disorder, since once the panic attack is out of patient’s life, it will not happen at night, as well.
